This exhibition showcases the works of contemporary Cherokee beadwork made by fourteen artists, almost all of them of Cherokee descent. The astonishing beauty of the finished work is a product of painstaking effort guided by the patience and artistic insight of the individual artists.
Perhaps even more astonishing is that this effort is founded upon a revival of a tradition that had been lost for over one hundred years until the second half of the twentieth century. Central to this revival is the figure of Martha Berry, a Cherokee descendant, who has guest-curated this exhibition of beadwork objects ranging from sashes, belts, purses, and bandolier bags to leggings and moccasins.
Cherokee Beadwork: Finding a Lost Art was organized by the Tyler Museum of Art and curated by Martha Berry.
