The Tyler Museum of Art exists as an educational and cultural center to enrich the lives of East Texas citizens and visitors through the collection, preservation, study, exhibition, interpretation, and celebration of the visual arts.


The Director reports to the Tyler Museum of Art Board of Trustees. The Director has full responsibility and authority for the management and coordination of the Museum's operations, the staff and their activities and for implementing the plans and programs of the Museum in accordance with policies formulated jointly with the Board of Trustees.

Specific responsibilities include:
• Work with the Board of Trustees to articulate and advance the museum’s mission and vision
• Work with the Board of Trustees, Staff and Stakeholders to develop and achieve long range strategic goals in order to fulfill the museum’s stated mission, ensure its financial stability, and guide its growth
• Communicate openly with the Board so that all parties recognize pertinent operating issues, problems or potential problems, and any meaningful deviations from the Institutional Plan
• Serve as an ex-officio member on all standing and ad hoc committees as directed by the President or Executive Committee
• Help develop and maintain donor relations


• Policy making and development of an annual business plan (under the direction and approval of the Board of Trustees)
• Development of professional practices such as acquisitions, de-accessioning, preservation, research, interpretation and presentation
• Develop and manage the Museum's budget (to be approved by the Board of Trustees)
• Work with Board of Trustees and staff to raise funds from memberships, grants, fundraising activities and other outside sources
• Facilitate a regular strategic planning process
• Oversee all programs, services and activities to ensure museum standards are met to maintain American Association of Museums accreditation
• Supervise the operation and maintenance of the physical plant, including all service contracts and security and safety
• Recruit, appoint and supervise curatorial and administrative staff
• Develop management procedures and personnel policies
• Approve expenditures
• Represent the Tyler Museum of Art in the community and with the Stakeholders


• Minimum five years experience in museum-related employment
• Graduate degree preferred. Undergraduate degree with experience in museum-related activities will be considered
• Strong leadership and motivational ability
• Curatorial experience and broad based knowledge of art
• Competency in public speaking, public relations, and marketing
• Working knowledge of non-profit fiscal management, including budgeting, fundraising, grant writing and membership development
• Experience in Capital Campaign activities
