Cherokee Beadwork Workshop

Discover the once lost techniques used by the Cherokee people to create traditional beadwork during this exciting workshop led by artist and leading Cherokee beadwork expert, Martha Berry. In addition to technique, Mrs. Berry will also discuss the history of this art in its traditional form.
The workshop is being held in conjunction with the exhibition Cherokee Beadwork: Finding a Lost Art. Among the techniques to be covered during this workshop will be single bead edging, two-needle appliqué and (time permitting) two-bead flat stitch. Participants are asked to bring the following, which can be purchased at a local arts and crafts and/or fabric store, such as Hobby Lobby:
• 1 (one) 12 inch embroidery hoop
• 1/2 yard inexpensive muslin cloth
• 1 spool all-purpose thread, any color
• 1 or 2 regular hand sewing needles
• 1 felt square, any color
• 1 hank or tube of size 10 or 11 seed beads, any color
• 1 thimble, if you are accustomed to using one
The instructor will provide other materials including beading needles, pins, wax, instructional handouts, and more, which will allow participants to pursue further projects on their own following the workshop.

Hear artist Martha Berry discuss "The Rise, Loss and Revival of Traditional Cherokee Beadwork" at the Tyler Museum of Art on Thursday, July 29 in the TMA Classroom.
This will be the second lecture of the Summer Series, and Mrs. Berry will draw from the exhibition for which she served as both guest curator and featured artist, Cherokee Beadwork: Finding a Lost Art which is on view now in the Museum's Bell Gallery through Sunday, August 15.
There is no charge for the lecture, but participants are asked to reserve their space by calling the TMA at 903.595.1001.

Martha Berry, a leading expert on traditional Cherokee beadwork and an artist whose works are currently on view in the exhibition Cherokee Beadwork: Finding a Lost Art will deliver a lecture titled "The Rise, Loss & Revival of Traditional Cherokee Beadwork" in the TMA Classroom on Thursday, July 29 beginning at 5:30 p.m.

“My lecture will feature many images of both historic Cherokee beaded artifacts and also contemporary Cherokee revival beadwork,” says Mrs. Berry. She plans on telling the story of a beautiful art form that once was lost, examining why it was lost, and also discussing how the art form is being revived today.
