Creating Connections in the Community
Seniors' Outreach Receives Support from TCA
The Tyler Museum of Art has a long history of providing enriching programming for children, adults and senior citizens in our community. But what happens when those individuals are not physically able to visit the Museum? In the summer of 2010, TMA initiated a pilot program that would bring art to senior residents of local assisted living facilities with the help of a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts.
Members of the TMA education staff took art supplies and reproductions of artworks selected from the Museum's permanent collection and led residents through sessions designed to deliver a fine arts experience outside the Museum's walls. Residents enjoyed an educational component during which they learned about the artwork on view. Then, education staff assisted participants with a hands-on art project related to the information the seniors had just learned.
This pilot program was a great success, and pending further funding, the TMA is poised to launch a comprehensive Seniors Outreach Program that is integrated with current on-site seniors programming.
